The other day I was mailing some packages at the post office, and the postal worker looked at the addresses and asked if I was from North Carolina. I said no, that I was from California...I must have looked a little wistful because he asked me if I missed anything about California now that I live in Austin. "The ocean," I said. "Yeah," he said.

Do market values--such as competition, expansion, and profit maximization--work for or against long-term sustainable practices? Some people believe that if sustainable practices made good business sense, then private enterprise would push forward, encouraging innovation, accelerating change, etc. I don't know. It seems strange for a system based on profit to work for the communal good in a real way. I've selected most of these videos to question them. Is buying chips packaged in a bag made of more recycled material really a sustainable practice? Sure, a recycled bag is better than a non-recycled bag...but if I'm focusing on the bag and not the chips, the manufacturing processes, the buying habits...then maybe I'm only making myself feel better...after all, "the system" has been good to me...and getting rid of the chips...that's extreme, right?
