Upcoming Exhibitions

In January 2010, a new exhibition will open in the east wing of the archive. This exhibition will explore the link between Saturday morning cartoons and advertising. Viewers will be able to watch film clips from classic television commercials that were aimed directly at small children, with marketed items consisting primarily of sugary breakfast cereals, toys, and theme parks.

Benefit Dinner

Are you in need of suggestions for a romantic Valentine’s Day surprise? We will be hosting a benefit dinner on February 14th to raise money for the archive, and particularly to fund a new position for an audio-visual conservator. Come dine in our banquet hall, watch romantic cartoons, and charm your sweetheart with your ingenious and philanthropic Valentine’s Day plans.

Children’s Cartoon Hour

Children’s Cartoon Hour is hosted the first Saturday of every month in the Movie Theatre of the Archive. Bring your children, ages 3-12, to watch some of the classic cartoons that you remember from your own childhood. Next month’s theme is Winter Holidays – come see your favorite cartoon characters as they celebrate the season of snow, and all of the mischief that comes along!

The Archive will be continuing its lecture series on the last Thursday of every month:

  • November 28th: The Ever Fashionable Betty Boop: How America’s Sweetheart Influenced American Fashion and Costume Design
  • December 27th: Here He Comes to Save The Day: Mighty Mouse and the Fight Against Communism
  • January 26th: Olive Oyl: Wife, Girlfriend, or Mistress?

Join our curators as they explore some of the lesser-known history and themes behind your favorite cartoons!

Did you know that Bugs Bunny – a animated character from the Merrie Melodies and Looney Toons cartoons – has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Not bad for a rabbit!
